Low-slope roofs are ideal locations for PV systems: the solar resource is good; power is generated in close proximity to loads; the location is secure and unobtrusive; and one- and two-story buildings in particular have favorable ratios of roof-to-wall area. Best of all, low-slope roofs are plentiful.

As an incentive to reduce the energy used in commercial buildings, the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing and the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association support legislation that would provide a new, 30 percent tax credit for energy-efficient roofs installed on new and existing commercial buildings and high rise residential buildings. Commercial buildings account for 18% of the energy use and CO2 emissions in the United States. The tax credit would cover energy-efficient roofs placed in service from 2009 through 2013. Also, the credit would be available to low-slope roofs where the insulation is installed entirely above deck, a roof category that covers approximately 62% of the existing commercial building floor space.

Special Report Prepared by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing…
The latest iteration of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED system, LEED 2009 version 3, has re-weighted credits to prioritize strategies that will have the most effect on addressing climate change by increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
LEED serves as a framework for facility executives to consider ways building systems like the roof can contribute to green initiatives. In North American, 4 billion square feet of commercial roofs is installed annually, according to Tegnos Research. Of that, 75 percent is re-roofing work.
While it isn’t possible to use LEED to certify the roof by itself, several strategies can make the roof do more work than just keeping the floors dry. And while these steps might not be as simple as swapping out light bulbs, their benefit are long-lasting and often hard to dispute.
