As an incentive to reduce the energy used in commercial buildings, the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing and the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association support legislation that would provide a new, 30 percent tax credit for energy-efficient roofs installed on new and existing commercial buildings and high rise residential buildings. Commercial buildings account for 18% of the energy use and CO2 emissions in the United States. The tax credit would cover energy-efficient roofs placed in service from 2009 through 2013. Also, the credit would be available to low-slope roofs where the insulation is installed entirely above deck, a roof category that covers approximately 62% of the existing commercial building floor space.

Special Report Prepared by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing…
The latest iteration of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED system, LEED 2009 version 3, has re-weighted credits to prioritize strategies that will have the most effect on addressing climate change by increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
LEED serves as a framework for facility executives to consider ways building systems like the roof can contribute to green initiatives. In North American, 4 billion square feet of commercial roofs is installed annually, according to Tegnos Research. Of that, 75 percent is re-roofing work.
While it isn’t possible to use LEED to certify the roof by itself, several strategies can make the roof do more work than just keeping the floors dry. And while these steps might not be as simple as swapping out light bulbs, their benefit are long-lasting and often hard to dispute.

Kick off the new school year by coming to the first-ever Kansas Green Schools Conference!
The Conference will focus on all aspects of healthy, sustainable environments, such as green infrastructure, projects for the classroom, environmental education curriculum, teaching students about green careers, and more!
Dynamic speaker Robert J. Kobet will inspire us with his passion for children, knowledge of green schools around the world, and experience in green design. Panelists from Kansas schools that have received Green Schools Grants will give you plenty of ideas for your own projects. Representatives from the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE), Wind for Schools, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, StoneLion Puppet Theatre, U.S. Green Building Council, State Energy Office, and others will answer questions and give you tips on how to write successful grants, plan an environmental festival, incorporate environmental education into your curriculum, and get kids outdoors.
Join us as sponsors of the conference for this fun and informative day!

The State of Kansas and Sunflower Electric Power Company has reached an agreement resolving ongoing litigation over whether coal fired power plants will be built in southwest Kansas.
Governor Mark Parkinson announced that agreement has been reached to build one, 895-megawatt coal fired power plant at Holcomb. The agreement also requires the company to build a 179-megawatt wind farm immediately, and bring online an additional 30+ megawatts of wind energy by 2016.
The provisions reviewed are to be signed into law this week in return for the allowance of one immediate air-quality permit for the power plant. Find out how this compromise affects the renewable market in the state…
